Aeros Take Down Checkers 5-2

HOUSTON --- Jon DiSalvatore scored twice, Drew Bagnall had a goal and an assist and Jed Ortmeyer scored as the Houston Aeros defeated the Charlotte Checkers 5-2 Sunday at Toyota Center.

Casey Wellman had a goal and an assist, and Matt Hackett made 31 saves for the Aeros, which improved to 9-3-0-3 and moved back into a tie for the first place in the West Division.

DiSalvatore gave the Aeros a 1-0 lead at 6:47 in the first, and Bagnall extended the lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the season at 17:12 in the first.

After Matthew Pistilli cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal at 6:49 in the second, DiSalvatore scored on a breakaway at 7:44 in the second to give Houston a 3-1 lead. Ortmeyer made it 4-1 at 9:33 in the second with his fourth goal of the season.

Jon Matsumoto scored for Charlotte at 7:53 in the third period before Wellman added an empty net power play goal at 19:19 in the third for his team-leading tenth goal of the season. Mike Murphy had 26 saves for Charlotte.

The Aeros finish their four-game homestand at Toyota Center against Texas Friday at 7:35 p.m.
