HERSHEY, Pa. - Tomas Marcinko's shorthanded goal and David Ullstrom's completion of an end-to-end rush helped the Bridgeport Sound Tigers claim a 4-3 win over the HERSHEY BEARS on Sunday night at GIANT Center.
The BEARS jumped out to a 1-0 lead on their first power play of the game, when Chris Bourque fired a Patrick McNeill pass behind Sound Tigers netminder Anders Nilsson at 8:42.
Bridgeport tied the score when they were awarded their second penalty shot in as many nights at 15:09 of the first. Rookie defenseman Brett Flemming was whistled for closing his hand on the puck in the goal crease, giving Nino Niederreiter a chance by himself. He beat Braden Holtby with a backhand shot into the upper right corner to knot the score 1-1.
The visitors took their first lead of the night at 11:29 of the second frame while working on their second power play. Winger Tim Wallace took a feed from Aaron Ness after the defenseman helped break up a shorthanded chance from HERSHEY, and snapped a shot under Holtby's glove.
HERSHEY tied it up just 1:11 later when Christian Hanson's hard work in the corner helped push the puck to a wide-open Jacob Micflikier stationed at the left of Nilsson's crease. Micflikier waited for Nilsson to flinch, then placed a perfect wrist shot into the upper part of the net to even the score 2-2.
Bridgeport then took a 3-2 lead at 10:39 of the third, when Marcinko took a pass from Michael Haley and beat Holtby with a wrist shot while working shorthanded.
Ullstrom made it 4-2 at 13:46, then Dmitry Orlov then stole a clearing pass at the top of the Sound Tigers' defensive zone and sent a blast past Nilsson at 17:55, bringing the BEARS back to within a goal. But Holtby could not get to the bench for an extra attacker until inside the game's final minute, and the Sound Tigers held on for a win in their franchise-record tenth consecutive one-goal game.
Holtby took the loss, stopping 24 of 28 shots. Nilsson earned first-star honors in turning aside 34 BEARS chances. The BEARS finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play, and gave up a man-advantage goal for just the second time this season on home ice, finishing with a 4-for-5 penalty kill.
The BEARS drop to 7-4-3-0 on the season with the loss.
HERSHEY will visit upstate New York on Friday, November 18, for a 7:30 PM faceoff against the Syracuse Crunch. The team returns the next night, Saturday November 19, for a 7:00 pm matchup against the Albany Devils.
