Devils Fall in OT to Marlies

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Albany Devils didn't get the result they were looking for, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Toronto Marlies Sunday at the Times Union Center. However, the Devils did earn a point, which places them atop the Northeast Division with an 8-6-1-1 record.

"We've been doing a good job of just focusing game in and game out," said head coach Rick Kowalsky about taking over first place in the division. "We have to keep doing that. It's way too early to look at the standings. As you can see from top to bottom it's going to be a tight race this year."

Toronto's Nazem Kadri spoiled the Devils effort for their eighth win in the last 10 games. He scored on a breakaway at 1:51 of overtime thanks to a breakout pass by Jerry D'Amigo.

Steve Bernier, Nathan Perkovich and Matt Anderson were the goal scorers for Albany and goaltender Keith Kinkaid made 31 saves in his seventh start of the season.

"It feels good putting the puck in the net - it's always a good feeling," Perkovich said. "But it's all about the team and trying to get the two points."

Toronto's Ryan Hamilton had a pair of goals; the first came at 5:44 of the first to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Bernier answered with his second shorthanded goal of the season, which began with a Marlies turnover in the neutral zone. He enjoyed a 2-on-1 with Darcy Zajac. The end result was a rebound goal at 3:38 of the second period.

Hamilton's second tally came moments later at 5:29 from his back, but again the Devils responded. Perkovich scored on a follow-up opportunity at 16:57 with assists going to Chad Wiseman and Steve Zalewski.

Before the end of the period, Matt Taormina threw a wrist shot at the net from the right point. Anderson was in front for the tip-in and his fourth goal of the year.

"We started to build momentum with the first goal and got some positive juices flowing," Anderson said. "Everyone rolled off that and we were able to capitalize on chances for the rest of the period."

A wrist shot by Toronto's Marcel Mueller pulled the game to 3-3 at 5:29 of the third, setting the stage for the overtime period.

Toronto outshot Albany, 35-26, and snapped a two-game losing skid.

With Connecticut losing to St. John's (4-3) and Adirondack enjoying the day off, the Devils grab sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division with 18 points.

Notes: After going scoreless during his first 12 games, Nathan Perkovich now has two goals in the last two games ... Matt Anderson is now eight points away from 150 career AHL points. He ended an eight-game goal drought ... Both of Steve Bernier's goals this season have been shorthanded with assists from Darcy Zajac ... Bryan Haczyk was recalled from Kalamazoo (ECHL) earlier in the day; he did not dress ... The Devils haven't lost at home in regulation since a 4-1 setback against Hershey on Oct. 21 ...
