Bortnick Signs with Seattle

Lancaster Barnstormers' second baseman Tyler Bortnick has been signed by the Seattle Mariners and assigned to Class AA Jackson, Tennessee, it was announced today.

Bortnick, 27, has been leading the Barnstormers in batting with a .298 average (.294, including the suspended game of May 18). He has amassed 10 doubles, one triple, one homer and 17 RBI and has added four stolen bases.

After spending the first month of the season at third base, Bortnick switched positions with Yusuke Kajimoto and took over at second, his natural position. He batted safely in the first seven games after the move and, at one point on the team's recent homestand, picked up 12 hits in 16 at bats.

The native of Ohio previously played in the Tampa Bay and Arizona farm systems, spending the last 2 1/2 seasons with Class AAA Reno. He batted over .300 in both 2010 and 2011 and led the Florida State League in stolen bases, playing for the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

He played collegiate baseball at Coastal Carolina where his team won the Big South all four seasons. He was tournament MVP his jumior year.

The Ohio native becomes the sixth player picked up from the Barnstormers this season and fourth by a Major League organization.
