Barnstormers Stymied Again

Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster hitters will be glad to get out of New Jersey.

On Saturday evening, the Barnstormers lineup managed only three singles and sent only one runner over the minimum to the plate as Lancaster fell to the Somerset Patriots, 2-0, at TD Bank Ballpark.

For the series, the Barnstormers managed only 14 hits, of which one went for extra bases, and never scored in regulation against the stingy Somerset pitching staff. The home ERA for the Patriots dropped to 1.21 for the 21 games on the season.

Keith Castillo, Kevin Rivers and Blake Gailen each mustered a single off Patriots starter Lucas Irvine (2-4). Castillo picked up a walk in the eighth. However, Castillo and Gailen were thrown out trying to steal on broken plays, and Castillo's walk was followed immediately by a double play ground ball, erasing yet another runner.

The Patriots fared little better against the Lancaster pitching staff, picking up only five singles, grounding into one double play and having one runner thrown out stealing.

However, it was the game's one defensive mistake that cost the Barnstormers dearly.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Greg Hopkins singled to right. Nate Reed (0-3) walked Jonny Tucker, adding a second runner. Aharon Eggleston hit a chopper into the hole at shortstop which was flagged by Lance Zawadzki, whose throw to second was barely late to force Tucker. Thomas Neal then hit a routine grounder to short, but Zawadzki's high throw went past Anderson Feliz, all the way into foul territory down the first base line as two runs scored.

Reed yielded four hits and four walks in his five innings while striking out seven. Pete Andrelczyk, Scott Patterson and Scott Gracey fired one shutout inning apiece.

The Barnstormers head to York on Sunday for a 5:00 meeting with the Revolution. Lancaster will send Dan Osterbrock (3-1) to the hill against fellow lefty Rommie Lewis (3-3). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 4:45.

NOTES: The Barnstormers have scored only one run in the last six road games, batting .115 with just one extra base hit, a double by Feliz on Tuesday...The club is 4-18 on the road for the season...Seven straight games at Santander Stadium have resulted in shutouts...Gailen reached base for the 11th consecutive game...Patterson allowed his first hit in over seven innings when Hopkins singled to center off him in the eighth...Barnstormers pitchers racked up 10 strikeouts in the game for the second straight night.
