SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, nearly overcame an 8-0 deficit but suffered an 8-6 defeat to the Washington Wild Things on Thursday night.
Washington became the first visiting team to win a series at Boomers Stadium this season, opening a 3-0 lead in the first on four singles. The Wild Things tacked on two in the fourth and three in the seventh against starter Hunter Ackerman to lead 8-0. Ackerman worked 6.1 innings in the loss.
Schaumburg came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six runs. The Boomers mustered just two hits in the frame, taking advantage of four walks and an error. Michael Valadez and Jordan Dean drew consecutive bases loaded walks to open the scoring. Alexi Colon notched a two-run single in the inning and Joe De Pinto plated a run on a groundout. Schaumburg placed the tying runs on base in the eighth but could not tie the game.
Schaumburg (41-30) will conclude the series with Washington on Friday night in a Bacon Bonanza that features postgame fireworks. RHP Eddie Cody (3-1, 2.95) starts for the Boomers while Washington counters with RHP Troy Marks (3-0, 0.92) in the finale.
