Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored runs in four straight innings to build a four-run lead and then fended off a late rally from the Frontier Greys to earn a 5-4 victory on Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.
TC jumped out on top in the third on an unusual play. With runners at the corners and two outs, Frontier pitcher Devon Pearson attempted to pick Greg Harisis off first. Harisis got in a rundown long enough to allow Jeff DeBlieux to steal home, making it 1-0. It was the start of a great night for DeBlieux, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the fourth inning, Josh Miller reached on a two-out error and promptly scored on an RBI single from Chris Cowell to up the lead to 2-0. An inning later, Jose Vargas led off with a double and was driven home on a one-out double from Jovan Rosa to make it 3-0.
Frontier got a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-1, but Traverse City responded by loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the frame. Vargas and Yazy Arbelo lifted back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Beach Bums a 5-1 advantage.
The Greys made things interesting in the top of the seventh, though, loading the bases with one out against Alex Phillips. Chuck Ghysels entered and allowed all three inherited runners to score on two walks and a broken-bat single, but got Chris Ellison to ground out with the bases loaded, stranding the tying run at third.
Will Rankin pitched the eighth and ninth innings, stranding a pair of runners in the ninth, to earn his fourth save of the season.
Phillips (3-6) posted another solid outing for Traverse City, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings with three strikeouts. Pearson (0-3) took the loss out of the Greys bullpen, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings.
The Beach Bums and Greys will square off in the rubber game of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Ian MacDougall (4-3, 3.53) will go for Traverse City while Frontier will counter with Brandon Rohde (7-3, 3.53). In addition to postgame fireworks, one lucky fan will win a seven-day vacation to Punta Cana courtesy of Passageways Travel and TVC Airport. Those unable to make the game can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
