Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored four runs to back a tremendous start by Miguel Ramirez (7-4) as they earned a 4-2 win over the Windy City Thunderbolts on a soggy Thursday night at Rent One Park.
Ramirez was in control the entire game, retiring 19 of the first 20 batters that he faced, getting through six and one-third innings with the lone blemish coming on a one-out, third-inning double by Garrett Carey. He also struck out eight batters, tying his season-high in the first six innings he pitched. After Kyle Robinson walked with one out in the seventh, the only walk against Ramirez all night that broke up a stretch of 12 in a row retired by the right-hander, he struck out the next two batters swinging for numbers nine and ten in the strikeout column, marking a new season-best by any Miners starter this season.
Offensively, the Miners rallied with two outs in the third inning, loading the bases before Steve Marino hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. Two more RBI singles in the fourth inning by Ryan Cavan and Frank Martinez increased the lead to 3-0 before Ramirez took over from there.
Ramirez did give up a two-run home run to Michael Allen to end his night in the eighth and make the score 3-2, but Matt Jones then drilled a solo shot over the left-center field wall for the final margin of victory, his second homer as a professional.
Derrick Miramontes came on in the ninth and struck out two in a flawless inning of work for his 16th save, as the Miners completed a game in which they struck out at least one Thunderbolts hitter in every single frame. Ramirez also won his fourth start in a row with the sterling performance.
Southern Illinois will go for the sweep in their final home game before a nine-game road trip beginning this weekend on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Matt Bywater gets the nod for the Miners, opposite the Thunderbolts' Daniel Cropper.
