Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 6, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners scored six runs in the sixth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate in taking a 9-2 lead before coasting to a 9-4 win over the Windy City Thunderbolts at Rent One Park on Wednesday night.
The Miners jumped out in front in the second inning, when with two outs, Aaron Gates singled and Steve Marino walked before Jay Austin hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. A similar sequence occurred in the fourth, when Gates walked with two outs and Marino followed with a double before Austin reached on an infield single to make it 2-0.
After Niko Vasquez's sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 3-0, Ryan McIntyre hit a two-run homer for Windy City off reliever Britt Robertshaw in the sixth to make the score 3-2. But the Miners would put the game away in the bottom of the frame. The first eight hitters in the bottom of the sixth reached base with no outs being recorded on four hits, three walks and a fielder's choice, prompting two different pitching changes by Windy City. Phil Butler (fielder's choice), Ryan Cavan (RBI single), Vasquez (bases-loaded walk) and Frank Martinez (RBI infield single) as well as an error on McIntyre accounted for the damage before the first out was recorded, and Marino would also walk with the bases filled to make the score 9-2 after six.
Windy City would score one run in the seventh and one in the eighth for the final margin against Steve Hagen, who pitched the final three innings for his first professional save. Rick Teasley got the win, pitching five scoreless innings to improve to 8-2 on the season. Austin led the charge offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs as the Miners won their 30th game at home in 2014 marking the sixth time in eight seasons of existence the team has reached that plateau.
The Miners will look to take the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with Miguel Ramirez pitching for Southern Illinois against Windy City's Heim Robb.
