Bombers Take One on the Chin against Pit Spitters

The Battle Creek Bombers were handed their worst loss of the season tonight as they were defeated by the Traverse City Pit Spitters 12-4.

Battle Creek secured an early lead after putting up three runs in the second inning, but the Pit Spitters were quick to respond with four of their own.

Collin Clayton started things off for the Bombers scoring unearned after reaching on an error then, with two runners on and two outs, a double from Kolby Johnson scored two more. Traverse City answered in the bottom half of the frame with four singles. Those singles, combined with two Bomber errors would give the Pit Spitters a 4-3 advantage.

In the top of the fifth inning Battle Creek was able to muster another run, but it would be their last of the night. Two singles by John Malcom and Jack Merrifield setup Kelby Weyler at the plate. After moving from the leadoff spot to the five hole, Weyler was able to send a fly ball to center field that would score Malcom.

Traverse City came right back in the bottom of the fifth to score three, regaining the lead and extending it to 7-4. But the Pit Spitters weren't done yet. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Pit Spitters would bat around the order putting up an additional five runs on seven hits. The Pit Spitters ended the game with a recorded 19 hits and each player in the lineup recorded at least one.

Bombers get another shot at the Great Lakes East Division Leaders tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
