Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were big winners in today's Ottawa Player Dispersal Draft, adding a total of eight players including two first-round selections in offensive linemen Ibrahim (Obby) Khan and Val St. Germain.
Khan (6-3, 304, Simon Fraser '03, DOB: Oct. 8, 1980 in Ottawa, Ont.) was the Bombers' top selection in the draft and the second overall pick. Khan was one of Ottawa's most versatile offensive linemen, playing guard, centre and tackle in 2005. The non-import O-lineman is young, eager and talented with an outstanding attitude and has tremendous potential to be a franchise cornerstone.
"I'm really excited about coming to Winnipeg," Khan said. "The Bombers' have a great organization and coaching staff. I can't wait to get out there."
St. Germain (6-4, 308, McGill '93, DOB: Oct. 8, 1971 in Ottawa, Ont.) was chosen following a trade with the Toronto Argonauts that saw the Bombers receive the Argos' first round pick in exchange for Winnipeg's second round pick in the dispersal draft and a second round pick (14th overall) in this year's Canadian College Draft.
Another non-import O-lineman, St. Germain has more than 160 games of CFL experience and has proven to be a solid player. He started all 18 games last year with the Renegades and made one defensive tackle.
The Bombers got one of the biggest steals of the draft in the second round, selecting import quarterback Brad Banks 13th overall. Banks (5-11, 204, Iowa '03, DOB: April 22, 1980 in Belle Glade, Fl.) completed five passes for 64 yards and one TD as a back-up to starting QB Kerry Joseph. Banks was a Heisman trophy runner-up in 2002.
Winnipeg stocked-up on non-import talent in the next three rounds. DE Hakeem Kashama (6-4, 267, Connecticut â03, DOB: Feb. 22, 1978 in Zaire) was acquired in the third round (18th overall) by Winnipeg after spending 2005 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He finished the season with four defensive tackles and four hits.
With their fourth round pick, the Bombers chose non-import defensive lineman Cameron Legault with the 26th overall selection. Legault (6-3, 270, Carleton '98, DOB: Sept. 25, 1974 in Ottawa, Ont.) made 22 defensive tackles in 18 games with the Renegades last season. He started the last five games of the season on the defensive line. He finished '05 with two sacks and one pass knockdown.
The Bombers chose non-import fullback Lenard Semajuste with their fifth round selection (34th overall). Winnipeg's remaining selections were import running back Henri Childs (sixth round, 42nd overall) and import defensive back Robert Grant (seventh round, 50th overall).
