Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

Hamilton, ON -- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that they have acquired running back/kick return specialist and 2005 CFL Outstanding Special Teams Player of the Year Corey Holmes, non-import safety Scott Gordon and the first round pick in the 2007 Canadian College Draft from the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for the first pick in this afternoon's Dispersal Draft.

"When you take a step back and look at the draft, if Corey Holmes was available in today's draft, we would have taken him first overall," said General Manager Rob Katz. "By getting the opportunity to get one of the most dynamic offensive and special teams threats in the CFL, as well as picking up a non-import safety that has started in this league and a #1 pick in next year's draft we have addressed some of our needs going into training camp."

"Anytime that you get the opportunity to secure a 27-year old Most Outstanding Player, as well as getting a Canadian safety that has proven himself in this league you have dramatically improved your football team," said Head Coach Greg Marshall.

Holmes, a five-year veteran out of Mississippi Valley State led the CFL in combined yards with 3,455 in 2005. The Western Division Most Outstanding Player rushed for 899 yards, had 56 receptions for 523 yards and had 1,992 combined return yards (second in the CFL) with three special teams touchdowns last season for the Roughriders earning him the CFL 2005 Outstanding Special Teams Player award.

"Holmes is a one of a kind, non-traditional running back who not only scares opposing defences with his running ability, but presents a major threat catching the ball out of the backfield, not to mention that he's the most explosive kick returner in the CFL," said Offensive Co-ordinator Joe Paopao. "If you combine him and (Josh) Ranek you have two of the top eight in the league in yards from scrimmage - having both guys on the field at the same time is going to present major challenges for our opponents.

Gordon, a four-year veteran out of Ottawa played in all eighteen games for the Roughriders making 40 tackles and 3 quarterback sacks.
