April 28, 2005 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB â While the Blue Bombers may not have had a huge quantity of picks in today's 2005 CFL College Draft, they made up for it in terms of quality.
The football club drafted three players who all have the ability to be impact additions in the years to come.
Joining the team are middle linebacker Scott Mennie (4th round, 30th overall), defensive end Martin Lapostolle (5th round, 39th overall) and Ryan Bisson (6th round, 48th overall).
"It was a real positive day for us," said Bombers head coach Jim Daley.
"The preliminary work (assistant coach/draft coordinator) Bob Dyce did was tremendous. To get the three players we did we are delighted."
Mennie, 25, was one of the steals of this year's draft. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound University of Manitoba Bisons product ranked 8th in the Canada West Conference with 41 defensive tackles in 2004. The Victoria native also had four sacks and two interceptions for the Herd.
"We are excited to add a player of Scott Mennie's ability," Dyce said.
"Scott brings a real toughness and a strong football intelligence. And he has the ability to contribute on every one of our special teams."
After playing for the U of M Bisons, being chosen by the Blue and Gold was a dream come true for Mennie.
"It couldn't be a better feeling or have worked out any better," he said. "I'm just going to work my butt off and do everything I can to make the team and get the job done."
The Bomber coaching staff was delighted to nab Lapostolle, 25, with their fifth pick.
The 6-foot-2, 283-pound defensive lineman started 19 of 31 games the past three seasons with the Indiana Hoosiers of the Big 10 Conference, including 11 of 12 in 2003. In 2004, he had 15 tackles including nine solo tackles. He also had one pass break-up and two quarterback hurries.
"We're confident Martin will come in and compete with our defensive lineman for a roster spot," Dyce said. "He's a strong, physical player with an aggressive attitude."
Bisson, 21, could be a huge addition for the Bombers â literally.
The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Burlington, Ont. was a standout for the Northwood University Timberwolves this past season and is expected to return there for his fifth and final season in the fall.
"Ryan is a big, strong offensive lineman," Dyce said. "With another year to develop in college, we are looking forward to having him compete in camp in 2006."
