Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

Hamilton, Ontario – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have completed the 2005 CFL Canadian College Draft, selecting six players including McMaster running back Jesse Lumsden. The 2004 Hec Crighton award-winner was chosen by the Ticats with their first round (6th overall) selection.

Lumsden was awarded the 2004 Hec Crighton Trophy last season after one of the greatest seasons in CIS football history. Last season, the 6'2", 226-pound running back set the Canadian Interuniversity Sport single-season rushing record with 1,816 yards and also set a new Ontario University Athletics career rushing mark with 4,328 yards.

Lumsden, a native of Burlington, Ontario, signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday.

"We wish Jesse all the best. As his university coach, I am proud of all of his accomplishments" said Ticats head coach Greg Marshall. "When it came to the sixth pick, he is just too good of a talent to pass on."

With their second round selection (15th overall) the Ticats picked another McMaster product, offensive lineman Fabio Filice.

"We were excited that Fabio was still available with our second pick," remarked Marshall. "I'm familiar with Fabio from our days together at McMaster so I know he's a great player and a great person to have on this team."

Filice, a 6'1", 277-pound native of Stoney Creek, Ontario played five seasons at McMaster and was named a four time OUA All-Star (first team - 2002, 2003, 2004, second team - 2001), as well as a two time CIS All-Canadian (first team – 2004, second team – 2003). Filice captained the McMaster offensive line last year as the Marauders rushed for a CIS-leading 2,555 yards.

In the third round (23rd overall), Hamilton chose tight end/long snapper Francois Brochu from Boston College. Brochu was used primarily as a long-snapper during his time with the Eagles.

The Ticats fourth round pick (32nd overall) was Saint Francis Xavier defensive back Jeremy Steeves. Steeves, a resident of Riverview, New Brunswick played four games for St. FX last season, recording 17 tackles and two interceptions.

With their fifth round pick (41st overall), the Tiger-Cats nabbed Iain Fleming, a receiver from Queen's.

Fleming, a 6'3", 195-pound slotback played four seasons for the Queen's University Golden Gaels, finished his university carrer with the second highest career receptions (123) and the third highest career receiving yards (2,170) and touchdowns (17). The Toronto native was a CIS All-Canadian selection in 2004 and a two-time OUA All-Star (2003, 2004).

Finally, with their last pick in the draft (50th overall), Hamilton selected San Jose State defensive lineman Andrew Paopao. Andrew is the son of Ottawa Renegades head coach and general manager Joe Paopao.
