Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL (October 31, 2005) - St. Louis Blues Senior Vice-president and General Manager Larry Pleau today announced that the club has recalled forwards Peter Sejna and Lee Stempniak from the Blues' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. In addition, the Blues have assigned forward Colin Hemingway, defenseman Andy Roach, and goaltender Curtis Sanford to Peoria.
Sejna, 26, now ranks fifth in the AHL and first on the team with 16 points (9 goals, 7 assists) in 10 games this season. A 5-9, 197-pound left wing, he captured CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week honors for the week ending October 9, a period during which Sejna registered four goals and added three assists as the Rivermen won the first three games of their inaugural AHL season. The Blues signed the native of Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia, as an undrafted free agent on April 6, 2003.
Stempniak, 22, has appeared in seven games as a Riverman thus far this season, registering two goals and two assists to go along with 10 penalty minutes. The 6-0, 195-pound rookie right wing has also seen action in two games for the Blues this season, having made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut in the Blues' home-opening game versus Detroit on October 6. Born in West Seneca, New York, Stempniak was originally selected by the Blues in the fifth round, 148th overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
Hemingway, 25, returns to Peoria after being recalled from his loan to the Rivermen on October 18. Measuring 6-0 and 194 pounds, he scored one point in each of Peoria's first five games of 2005-06 (3 goals, 2 assists) before joining St. Louis. A right wing out of Surrey, British Columbia, Hemingway was the Blues' eighth-round choice, 221st overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Roach, 32, has played in five contests with the Blues so far this season and collected one goal, two assists, and 10 penalty minutes. Last season, the 5-11, 185-pound defenseman played in Switzerland with Lausanne HC and recorded four goals, five assists, and 20 minutes in penalties. The Blues signed the native of Mattawan, Michigan, as a free agent on June 30, 2004.
Sanford, 26, rejoins the Rivermen after serving this past weekend as a short-term back-up to Blues goaltender Patrick Lalime. This season for the Rivermen, the 5-10, 188-pound netminder has posted a 3-2-0 record, a 2.21 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage, and one shutout. The product of Owen Sound, Ontario, joined the Blues organization as a free agent on October 1, 2000.
The Rivermen are a proud new member of the AHL. Founded in 1936, the AHL now serves as the primary development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams and is celebrating its 70th anniversary season in 2005-06.
