SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Marc-Andre Fleury of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins has been named the Koho/AHL Goaltender of the Month for October. Fleury was a perfect 6-0-0 in six starts on the month, with a 1.17 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage.
Fleury helped the Penguins open the season with a nine-game winning streak, longest in club history. He began the year with consecutive 26-save efforts in wins over Bridgeport and Hershey, then was recalled by the parent Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 9. Fleury made three NHL appearances before returning to Wilkes-Barre on Oct. 17, and he picked up where he left off, turning aside 31 shots in a 4-1 win at Syracuse on Oct. 21. By month's end, Fleury had stopped 148 of 155 shots in six AHL outings.
In recognition of his achievement, Fleury will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Penguins home game.
A native of Sorel, Que., the 20-year-old Fleury is in his third professional season after being selected by Pittsburgh as the first overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In addition to his six victories, Fleury also leads the AHL in goals-against average (1.17) and save percentage (.955), and now owns a record of 32-19-4 in 60 career AHL appearances with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Other nominees for Koho/AHL Goaltender of the Month include Nolan Schaefer of Cleveland, Al Montoya of Hartford, Vitali Kolesnik of Lowell, Jason Bacashihua of Peoria, Jamie Storr of Philadelphia, Nathan Marsters of Portland, Jordan Sigalet of Providence, Steve Passmore of San Antonio and Andrew Penner of Syracuse.
