Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - The Lakewood BlueClaws made it 6 consecutive victories with a 6-5 win in 10 innings of Monday over the West Virginia Power. The win for Lakewood meant a lot more than just their 6th straight win. The win means the BlueClaws finished up their 7-game road trip with a 6-1 record, it got them to .500 on the year for the first time since they were 4-4 to start the year, and it gives Lakewood their first 6-game winning streak since July of 2008.
It was a matchup of 1st rounders from last June's MLB Draft on the mound Monday with the #2 overall pick RHP Jameson Taillon getting the start for the Power and #27 overall pick LHP Jesse Biddle throwing for Lakewood. Each starter went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs, and neither one factored in the decision. Biddle allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, but walked 5 and struck out 5 in his 5 innings. Taillon gave up 7 hits and 3 runs, walked only 1 and struck out 2. Juan Sosa blew the save in the 9th for Lakewood when he allowed a lead-off HR to Rogelio Noris to tie it at 5-5, but then got credit for the win after he got the first 2 outs of the 10th with Lakewood up 6-5 before he gave way to Jay Johnson for the final out of the ballgame.
Anthony Hewitt continues to smash the ball as he went 3-5 with 2 singles, a solo HR, 2 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored. The HR was the 6th of the year for Hewitt, and all of them have come since May 1st. Michael Dabbs smacked his first HR of the year for Lakewood when he tied the game at 4-4 with 1 out in the top of the 8th inning, and then Hewitt made it back-to-back Hr's for the 2nd straight day for the BlueClaws with his solo shot off Power RP Tyler Waldren. Carlos Perdomo went into the game when SS Edgar Duran got hurt running the bases in the 1st inning, and played well in the reserve role. He went 1-2 with an RBI single, walked twice, and he also stole 2 bases.
The BlueClaws will enjoy a day off Tuesday as they head back to Lakewood and get ready for a 7 game home stand starting on Wednesday with the first game of a 4 game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 11:05 am, and it will be a matchup of RHP's on the mound. Garett Claypool (1-2, 2.48 ERA) will start for Lakewood, and Rett Varner (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will throw for Greensboro.
