Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 23, 2011) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators couldn't keep pace with the offense of the Delmarva Shorebirds, dropping Monday night's game 9-6 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Shorebirds took three of four games in Kannapolis to win the series.
Shortstop Jonathan Schoop paced Delmarva, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, and leadoff man Mikey Planeta went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
Trailing 9-5 entering the bottom of the sixth, Kyle Eveland led off the inning with a double and scored on a John Spatola single, pulling Kannapolis within three. The Intimidators brought the tying run to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs, but reliever Ryan Palsha struck out Thompson to end the inning. The Intimidators would not threaten again.
Scott Copeland (4-2) earned the win for Delmarva, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 11 hits, and David Walters picked up his league- leading 12 save of the season.
After Delmarva struck for three runs in the top of the first inning, Kannapolis returned fire as Ross Wilson, Drew Lee and Trayce Thompson began the bottom of the first with three straight singles. Lee scored on a Brady Shoemaker groundout, and Dan Black singled home Thompson to tie the game, 3-3.
The Shorebirds responded with Schoop's two-run double to reclaim the lead, 5-3, chasing Intimidators starter Steven Upchurch (1-3) from the game after two innings, tagging him for the loss with five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Juan Silverio led off the bottom of the second with a walk, and Thompson drove him home with a two-out single to pull within a run, 5-4.
Phil Negus came on in relief for Kannapolis and retired the first eight batters he faced. The Shorebirds got to Negus in the top of the fifth with a two out rally, capped by Justin Dalles' two-run home run to give Delmarva an 8-4 lead. Kannapolis got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a Mike Blanke ground out to score Lee.
The Intimidators have Tuesday off before traveling to Greenville to begin a four-game series against the Drive on Wednesday. The Intimidators will return home to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday, May 29, to begin a four-game series against the Hagerstown Suns and 2010 No. 1 overall draft pick Bryce Harper.
