Hickory Crawdads News Release
ROME, GA - The Hickory Crawdads set season highs with 15 runs and 16 hits in the decisive 15-5 victory against the Rome Braves, before 2,102 fans at State Mutual Stadium in Rome on Monday night.
The Crawdads (24-20) took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first against LHP Ronan Pacheco (L, 2-4). SS Jurickson Profar led off with a double to left field, and then came home when C Tomas Telis reached on a two-base fielding error by Rome SS Jarred Frierson. One out later, DH Andrew Clark brought in Telis from second with an RBI single up the middle, moving the 'Dads into the early 2-0 lead.
The Braves (16-29) came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first against RHP Justin Grimm. With runners at the corners and two out, 3B Jake Dalfonso and C Christian Bethancourt strung together consecutive RBI singles to square the score, 2-2.
The 'Dads blew the game open with five runs against Pacheco and LHP Steven Kent in the top of the fifth. Profar again led off with a double and quickly came home on an RBI double by C Tomas Telis. One out later, Telis came in on an RBI grounder by Clark, who reached first base on the play. A walk by 3B Christian Villanueva and a base hit by CF Jake Skole loaded the bases, which were then quickly unloaded by a three-run double by LF Alejandro Selen, capping the big inning and stretching the lead to 7-2.
Rome came right back with a pair of RBI singles by Rohm and Dalfonso in the fifth, but then RHP Colby Killian (W, 3-1) took over and got out of the frame with no further damage done and the Crawdads ahead, 7-4.
It did not take long for the Crawdads to stretch the lead right back out, tallying four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two out and no one on, Selen doubled again and was followed by a 1B Jhonny Gomez walk. 2B Odubel Herrera then drove an RBI single up the middle, followed by a two-run triple by Profar to make it 10-4 and chase Kent from the mound. RHP Matt Suschak took over for Rome, and was welcomed to the mound by an RBI double by Telis to put the Crawdads up, 11-4.
RHP Nick Tepesch came in for the Crawdads to pitch the seventh and retired the first two before Dalfonso hit a solo shot, accounting for the Braves fifth run and cutting the deficit to 11-5.
However, Hickory came back and scored four more runs in a bases-loaded rally in the ninth. Telis and Clark both drew RBI walks, and the inning was capped by a two-run single from 3B Christian Villanueva to account for the 15-5 final score in the Crawdads win.
