Hagerstown Suns News Release
Greensboro, NC- On a sunny Sunday afternoon at NewBridge Bank Park in game three of their four game series, the Hagerstown Suns (27-16) fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers (26-17) by a score of 5-2. Greensboro RHP Kyle Winters (5-2), the winning pitcher, tossed 6.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks. The Grasshoppers bullpen made up of RHP Adam Veres, LHP Grant Dayton, and RHP Michael Brady (6 SV) combined for three scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out four.
The home team struck first with one run in the 2nd inning on an RBI single up the first base line off the bat of C Aaron Dudley.
The Suns tied the game with a run in the 3rd frame when DH Blake Kelso's bunt single was thrown away at first base by Winters, allowing 3B Sean Nicol, who singled to center field, to come around and score.
The Grasshoppers tallied two runs in the 4th inning as CF Isaac Galloway rushed home on a wild pitch from RHP Taylor Jordan (6-1), the losing pitcher, who allowed four runs, three of them earned, on four hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Jordan, the ace of the Suns' staff, was the only undefeated Hagerstown starting pitcher entering the contest. LF James Wooster added an insurance run with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field summoning home 1B Brian McConkey, who singled to center.
Each club crossed home once in the fifth stanza. Nicol homered on the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall, his first of the season, during his best offensive game of the year. Nicol scored two runs and also singled in the ballgame. The solo shot briefly put Hagerstown within one run of the hosting Grasshoppers before Galloway doubled home SS Daniel Black, who singled back up the middle, towards the left field line.
Dudley's second RBI single of the game, a liner to center field, would give the Grasshoppers a 5-2 advantage they would not relinquish.
Brady, in the closer's role, struck out two batters in the 9th inning to give Greensboro the series victory and their fourth consecutive triumph.
The Suns will look to salvage the final game of this series with the Grasshoppers on Monday morning for a 10:45am first pitch. Pregame coverage on MiLB.com will begin at 10:30am with the Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show. The Suns will send LHP Matt Grace (3-4, 4.66) to the hill to face off with Grasshoppers RHP Robert Morey (3-4, 4.98).
