Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Ryan Scoma's grand slam was the big hit for the Augusta GreenJackets in a seven-run fourth inning that led the GreenJackets to an 11-6 win over the Charleston RiverDogs Monday afternoon. With the win, the GreenJackets took three of four from Charleston - their second straight road series win - and earned their first three-game winning streak of the year.
An error in the fourth brought home a run and a bases-loaded walk to Carlos Willoughby pushed the GreenJackets lead to 6-1. Scoma then unloaded on a 2-1 pitch from Charleston starter Zach Nuding to drill the first GreenJackets grand slam of the season over the right field wall at Joseph P. Riley Park to give Augusta a 10-1 edge. Scoma also doubled home a run in his five RBI day.
Charleston starter Zach Nuding was effective the first time through the GreenJackets lineup, but was hit around on the second trip and left after failing to retire any of the six men he faced in the fourth inning. Nuding (4-4) allowed nine runs on seven hits and four walks with a strikeout.
Chris Lofton drove home a run in the fifth with an RBI single to give the GreenJackets a ten-run lead that was more than large enough for Mike Kickham, who earned his first professional win. Kickham (1-1) fired six innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out a career-best eight.
The RiverDogs tried to make things interesting late, scoring four times off Seth Rosin in the eighth. RBI singles from Kyle Roller and Ramon Flores brought home runs while Charleston scored twice more on a groundout and error. In the ninth, a sacrifice fly cut the Augusta lead to five runs but Edward Concepcion was able to hang on for the win.
The GreenJackets jumped out to an early lead in the second with four straight two-out hits off Nuding. RBI singles by Willoughby and Ehire Adrianza brought home a pair while Scoma's double pushed the lead out to three. Charleston answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an Anderson Feliz RBI double prior to the Augusta explosion in the fourth.
After a day off on Tuesday, the GreenJackets return home to open a four-game series with the Savannah Sand Gnats on Wednesday night. Gaspar Santiago (0-0, 3.32) makes his first start of the season and will face Gonzalez Germen (3-1, 3.68) as the GreenJackets close in on their one-millionth fan under Ripken Baseball ownership. That lucky fan will win a trip for four to Disneyworld, courtesy of Augusta Vascular Center. First pitch will come at 7:05 on Wednesday with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
