Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (4-13) and the Savannah Sand Gnats (9-7) were in a seesaw affair that ended in the favor of the Sand Gnats 6-4, Saturday evening at FirstEnergy Park. The loss marks the second in a row for Lakewood, and the fourth in five games.

With the game tied at three in the sixth, Mickey Morandini turned to Jeb Stefan in hopes of preserving the tie. Stefan struggled to find the strike zone and walked the bases loaded with two down in front of Jayce Boyd.

Boyd responded with a two-run single to left and put the Gnats in front for good at 5-3. After the BlueClaws scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, Savannah manufactured a run in the seventh to push the lead to 6-4.

Lakewood started the scoring in the first inning when Zach Taylor doubled and scored on Alejandro Villalobos' single. Roman Quinn homered to right to begin things in the third and put the BlueClaws back out in front at 2-1 after Savannah responded in the top of the inning.

In the third, Mitch Walding hit a line drive to right that appeared to go over the wall for a two-run home run, however the umpires ruled the ball hit off of the top of the padded portion of the wall and hopped out of the park, making it a ground rule double. Carlos Tocci flied to center and the BlueClaws did not add to its lead in the inning.

The teams once again traded runs in the fifth to get the game tied at three before the action in the sixth.

Josh Warner started his fourth game for Lakewood and delivered five solid innings. The Aussie righty allowed three runs over five innings; he walked four and struck out six. Stefan (0-2) took the loss and Felix Santos gave up the lone run in the seventh across his three innings of work.

Rainy Lara pitched the first five and one-third for Savannah and looked to Hunter Carnevale to close his book in the sixth. Carnevale stranded two runners in scoring position over the final two outs and kept Lara (2-1) in line for the win. Lara allowed four runs on 11 hits; he walked one and struck out two. Jake Kuebler pitched the seventh and eighth in scoreless fashion and Brett Mitchell picked up his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.

Deborah Heart and Lung Center Player of the Game: Jayce Boyd (SAV) 3-4, 2B, 4RBI

The Lakewood BlueClaws wrap up the brief four game homestand, against the Sand Gnats with game four Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM at FirstEnergy Park. RHP Shane Watson (0-1, 4.76) is slated to get the start for Lakewood and RHP Logan Taylor (0-0, 3.00) will go for Savannah in the Sunday afternoon affair.
