Game #16 (7-8) - Away Game #9 (5-3)
RHP Myles Jaye (3-0, 1.00) vs. RHP Kendry Flores (1-0, 2.45)
Today's Preview: A day after rain postponed the second game of a four- game series in Augusta, the Intimidators (A, White Sox) look to snap a four-game losing skid as they face the GreenJackets (A, Giants). Augusta earned a 5-1 win in the series opener behind highly-touted pitching prospect Chris Stratton on Thursday night. Kannapolis sends its to arm to the hill today as Myles Jaye takes the ball for the fourth time this season, going up against fellow right-hander Kendry Flores. The Intimidators offense has not scored more than four runs since Jaye's last start on April 14, the date of the team's last win. Kannapolis enjoyed early road success this season with series victories at Lakewood and Delmarva to open the year. Augusta enters today with a SAL-best 10-4 record. Sub .500: The Intimidators are now 7-8, below .500 for the first time this season, fifth in the seven-team SAL Northern Division standings, 2.5 games out of first.
Intimidating Starter: Myles Jaye, 21, makes his team-leading fourth start of the season in pursuit of his league-leading fourth win. He ranks fourth in the SAL with 18.0 innings pitched this season and his 1.00 ERA ranks fifth. He is coming off a career-long outing, working eight scoreless innings allowing four base runners and striking out seven as Kannapolis shut out the Crawdads on April 14. Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 17th round of the June 2010 draft, the White Sox acquired the Fayetteville, Ga., native in a January 2012 trade along with fellow minor leaguer Daniel Webb for major league pitcher Jason Frasor.
Augusta's Arm: Kendry Flores, 21, makes his third start of the season and second at home. He earned a win in his most recent outing, allowing a run on three hits over 5.0 innings while striking out six against Charleston. Opponents are batting just .195 (8-41) against the righty. The Dominican native was signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2010, and he made his professional debut for the AZL Giants that year. His career stats entering this game include an 11-10 record with a career 4.21 ERA in 37 games (32 starts). He spent the last two seasons with Short-Season Salem-Kaizer in the Northwest League.
About Last Night: Augusta's Chris Stratton limited Kannapolis to a run over 6 2/3 innings en route to the GreenJackets 5-1 win on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Stratton, the Giants No. 3 prospect according to Baseball America, struck out seven on the night, allowing six base runners before Derek Law pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the save. The Intimidators managed four hits on the night as Patrick Palmeiro went 1-4 with the lone RBI for Kannapolis. Starter Jefferson Olacio took the loss, his third in as many outings.
Olacio Improving: Depsite taking a loss in Thursday's game at Augusta, Jefferson Olacio enjoyed his first quality start of the season and third of his career, giving up three runs over 6.0 innings. In 2012 with Advanced Rookie Bristol, Olacio twice logged quality starts, Olacio tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in a win against Johnson City (July 1), and he gave up one run over 6.0 innings in a loss at Kingsport (July 26). After working just 2/3 of an inning in his first start of 2013, he lasted 3 1/3 in his second outing before this quality start at Augusta.
Adam is Aboard: Center fielder Adam Heisler went 1-4 on Thursday and has reached base safely in his last 14 games, tying for the fourth- longest overall streak in the league dating back to last season and tying for the second longest streak of the 2013 season. He is batting . 308 (16-52) over his last 14 games and has drawn 11 walks in that time as well, leading to 13 runs scored over that stretch. Only Augusta's Matt Duffy (15) has a longer active on-base streak this season. His 13 runs scored are tied for fourth-most in the Sally League.
Worst if not first: Kannapolis is 7-2 this season when scoring the game's first run, tied for second-best in the SAL with an .778 winning percentage, just behind Delmarva (6-1). When the Intimidators' opponent scores first, the team is 0-6 this season.
Alive After Five: When leading after five innings, the Intimidators are 6-0 this season. When Kannapolis trails after five innings, the team is 0-8. When tied after five, the team is 1-0.
Micah on the Move: Leadoff man Micah Johnson swiped second base Tuesday against the Shorebirds giving himself a league-leading 12 stolen bases on the season. He is one ahead of Augusta's Jesus Galindo (11) on the season. Johnson is tied - along with teammate Adam Heisler and two others - for fourth in the league with 13 runs scored this season.
Losing Skid: The Intimidators current four-game losing streak is the team's longest since dropping five straight late last season (Aug. 29 - Sept 2).
