BlueClaws, Griffith shutout power

Charleston, WV - The Lakewood BlueClaws (12-15) offense woke up Thursday night and pounded the West Virginia Power (13-13), Single-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, 13-0. All the batters for Lakewood scored at least once and Derek Griffith pitched the complete game shutout.

Griffith (W, 6-8) kept the batters off balance all night and with the help of solid defense and two double plays turned faced the minimum number of batters through 7 1/3 innings. Griffith allowed just three hits in the game while walking three and striking out three.

Lakewood broke it open in the fifth already up 4-0 plating four runs to take an 8-0 lead. Sean Gamble and Brad Harman led off the inning with back-to-back base hits then Mike Dzurilla walked to load the bases up. After Doug Gredvig struck out for the first out of the inning Jason Jaramillo connected for an RBI base hit to chase the Power starter Josh Wahpepah (L, 5-5).

Chris Klemm struck out for the second out of the inning but three consecutive walks to Ryan Frith, Mike Lombardi and Josh Mader brought three more runs across to push Lakewood's lead to 8-0.

Lakewood added a run in the sixth on an RBI base hit from Klemm for a 9-0 BlueClaws lead. Klemm went 2-for-4 with three RBI's, two runs scored and a solo-homer.

Dzurilla added a three-run homer in the seventh with two outs in the inning for a 12-0 lead. It was Dzurilla's sixth homer of the year and finished the night 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and two runs scored while walking once.

The BlueClaws capped off their scoring in the eight plating a run on Klemm's sacrifice fly to center scoring Jaramillo from third for a 13-0 win. Jaramillo led off the inning with a triple.

The BlueClaws offense got off to an early start plating three runs in the second. With one out in the inning Jaramillo singled up the middle then moved up to second when Klemm reached on the fielding error from Wahpepah. Frith then singled to center to load the bases up for Lombardi. Lombardi drove in the first run of the game when he lifted a ball into center-field to plate Jaramillo. Left-fielder Josh Brady dropped the ball allowing Lombardi to reach first on the error.

Klemm then scored when Mader reached on a fielders-choice and Gamble capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI base hit to give Lakewood a 3-0 lead. Klemm made it 4-0 in the fourth with a solo-homer to lead off the inning, his third homer of the year and second to lead off an inning.

Lakewood continues their series with the Power on Friday night. Lakewood will send right-hander Andy Baldwin (2-8, 4.24) to the mound. First pitch on Friday night is at 7:05 p.m. with on-air time at 6:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.
