
BlueClaws Down Legends in Series Opener

Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (10-12) opened up a four game series on Saturday night against the Lexington Legends (11-11), Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, with a 4-2 win in front of 8,303 at FirstEnergy Park. It was the BlueClaws first win over the Legends after Lexington won the first eight meetings with two series sweeps in Lexington.
Lakewood broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over the Legends. Doug Gredvig led off the inning with a walk. Jason Jaramillo followed up with a base hit then both runners moved up on the sacrifice bunt from Sam Orr. Gredvig came home to score on Chris Klemm's ground out to give the BlueClaws the lead.
The BlueClaws added two more runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. With one out in the inning Orr drew a walk then Klemm followed up with a two-run homer to right-field. It was Klemm's first homer of the year and gave Lakewood two important insurance runs.
Lakewood took the early lead the game plating a run in their first at bat. After the first two batters were retired to start the bottom of the first, Mike Dzurilla connected for a base hit. Gredvig followed up with an RBI double plating Dzurilla from first to give Lakewood a 1-0 lead.
Lexington came right back in the second inning to tie the ball game up. J.R. Towles led off the inning with a base hit then swiped second. Towles moved up to third on the throwing error from Jaramillo. The ball sailed to the right of the second base bag and skipped off the glove of Josh Mader covering. Drew Sutton came up next and grounded out to third but on the play Towles came home to score.
BlueClaws starter Derek Griffith (5-8) picked up the win allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out six over seven innings.
Joe Bisenius pitched the eighth with Lakewood up 4-1 and after retiring the first two batters allowed a walk to Luke Barganier. Bisenius was then called for a balk advancing the runner up to second and Edwin Maysonet followed up with an RBI base hit for the Legends second run of the game.
Jacob Barrack pitched the ninth for his eighth save of the year allowing just a hit and striking out one.
Lakewood continues their series with the Legends on Sunday night. Lakewood will send right-hander Andy Baldwin (2-7, 4.02) to the mound while Lexington will counter with right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier (6-4, 2.68). First pitch on Sunday night is at 5:05 p.m. with on-air time at 5:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions, fireworks every Friday night home game and kids eat free Monday Nights courtesy of Shop Rite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against the New York Mets affiliate.
