Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, Ga. - Behind a solid start form GreenJackets starting pitcher Darren Sack and a key home run from Jon Armitage, the GreenJackets beat Greensboro 4-1 and won the season series, 6-2. Sack went 7 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and one run while striking out eight and walking just one. Sean Martin pitched 1 1/3 to pick up his third save of the season.
Alex Requena led off the first for the GreenJackets and advanced to second on shortsop Brian Cleveland's bad miscue trying to catch a pop-up. Requena stole third base, his 45th this season and was driven home on Marcus Sanders single to right. In the second inning, Simon Klink led off with a walk. Armitage, Augusta's hottest hitter, belted his eighth home run, this one to a two-run homer to left for a 3-0 lead. Carlos Sosa added an RBI triple to right driving in Julian Benavidez.
Tonight's story was Sack. Sack was helped out by two pickoffs and a double play. Sack and more importantly the GreenJackets win was preserved in the ninth. Martin got Cleveland to pop up and was the unfortunate bearer of a misjudgment between Armitage and Requena in the left center. The ball dropped off the bat of J.T. Restko, putting the potential winning run in the on deck circle. Brad McCann lined a ball down to third base that Simon Klink laid out and got. His errant throw was saved by Benavidez at first. Brad Davis singled to left, advancing McCann to third and the bases were loaded when Jared Gaston walked. Martin settled down and retired Andrew Jenkins on strikes to end the game.
The GreenJackets go on the road for eight games in Savannah and Hickory. The GreenJackets return home to play Greenville on July 26.
