Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws dropped their 2nd consecutive 1 run ballgame Friday night by a final score of 13-12 to the Asheville Tourists. Lakewood jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, then led 9-2 heading into the bottom of the 4th inning, but they just couldn't get enough outs and Asheville slugged their way to a 13-12 win. The Tourists scored 5 runs in the 4th inning, 4 in the 6th, and won on a walk-off wild pitch with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Asheville's Kyle Parker saw his first action of the series, and did he ever make the most of it. Parker had a game he won't soon forget as he went 4-6 at the plate with 2 singles, a double, a Grand Slam, scored 4 runs, and had 7 RBI's. Helder Velazquez reached base 5 times in the game for Asheville (1 walk, 2 doubles, and 2 singles), and every player in the Asheville lineup reached base at least once Friday night. BlueClaws pitchers combined to walk 9 batters, allow 16 hits, and give up 13 runs (10 earned).
Lakewood SP Jesse Biddle struggled right out the gates with his control walking 5 batters over 3 1/3rd innings. Hector Neris and Colby Shreve didn't pitch much better in relief for the BlueClaws as they combined to go 5 innings, gave up 13 hits, 9 runs, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Shreve picked up the loss as he allowed the single to lead off the 9th inning to Kyle Parker. Parker ended up scoring the winning run on a wild pitch by BlueClaws reliever Tyler Knigge. The Tourists SP Josh Slaats didn't fare any better as his final line was an ugly 3 1/3rd innings, 11 hits, 9 runs (all earned), and 2 strikeouts.
The BlueClaws tied the game in the 9th inning as Stephen Batts scored on Cameron Rupp's single to knot things up at 13, but it just was not to be Friday night. Geancarlo Mendez had a fantastic day at the plate as he went 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles, 4 runs scored, and 2 RBI. Jeremy Barnes hit his first HR of 2011, and was 2-5 in all with 4 RBI.
Tomorrow, it will be a rubber match of the 5 game series as Asheville has taken the last 2 games after Lakewood took the first 2 games of the series. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
