Shorebirds Survive Another Nailbitter, 6-5, To Level Series

Augusta, Ga. - The Augusta GreenJackets had the tying run at third base and the winning run at first base with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but were unable to score as the Shorebirds held on for a 6-5 win on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. After dropping the first two games of the series, the Shorebirds have won back-to-back games to level the series at two games apiece. All four games in the series have been decided by a single run.

The Shorebirds plated five of their six runs between the fifth and eighth innings.

Augusta took the early lead in the first inning. Carlos Willoughby drew a lead off walk. After stealing second, he scored on a single by Adam Duvall.

The Shorebirds got off to a slow start against GreenJackets starter Shawn Sanford. The right-hander shutout the ‘Birds through the first four innings and only faced one batter over the minimum. In the fifth, the Shorebirds got on the board to tie the game at 1-1. Kipp Schutz reached on a dropped pop up in the infield. After a double by Mike Flacco, Mychal Givens hit a grounder to short to plate Schutz.

Augusta responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Sundrendy Windster drew a walk to open the fifth. Then, Rafael Rodriguez singled to advance Windster to third. Ydwin Villegas followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Windster. With the bases loaded, Aaron Swenson walked Josh Mazolla to score Rodriguez.

The Shorebirds took the first lead of the night in the seventh inning. Kieron Pope led off with a single. After a Mike Flacco walk, Michael Ohlman hit an RBI single into left field to cut the deficit to 3-2. Brenden Webb hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Flacco. With two outs, Ohlman scored on a wild pitch by reliever Edward Escobar to give the Shorebirds a 4-3 lead.

Delmarva tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning. Manny Machado drew a walk to start the inning. Two batters later, Schutz blasted a double to the right field wall to score Machado from first. Schutz extended his hitting streak to seven games. With Schutz at third, Flacco hit a sacrifice liner to right field to give Delmarva a 6-3 edge.

Augusta added a run in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 6-4. Windster, who hit a two-out double, scored on a double by Rafael Rodriguez.

In the ninth, Willoughby drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double to the wall in left field by Raynor Campbell to cut the deficit to one run. With runners at first and third and nobody out, Walters got Mazolla to fly out to shallow left. Then, Devin Harris smashed a liner to third that was caught by Jonathan Schoop, who threw back to first to double off Adam Duvall to end the game. Walters picked up his league leading fifth save of the season.

Jarret Martin earned his first win of the season in three innings. He allowed three hits and one run. Edward Escobar was saddled with the loss for Augusta.

Shorebirds starter Tim Berry lasted 4.1 innings. He surrendered four hits and three runs.

The Shorebirds and GreenJackets play the rubber game of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
