Wallace goes 4-for-5 with 3-run homer, two triples as Legends win over Savannah, 6-3

Chris Wallace had a three-run homer, two triples and a single as the Lexington Legends defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-3 Friday night in Savannah.

With the score tied 2-2 and one out in the top of the seventh, Ben Orloff beat out a bunt, and Adam Bailey doubled to right field, putting runners at second and third. Telvin Nash singled to left, scoring Orloff to put the Legends in front 3-2. Wallace followed with his league-leading seventh home run of the year to give Lexington a 6-2 lead. Wallace had singled in the second inning, tripled in the fourth, and tripled again in the sixth. He had an opportunity for the cycle with a ninth inning at-bat, but lined out to center field. Wallace also leads the South Atlantic League in RBI with 22. He was named SAL Player of the Week for April 7-17.

Savannah took an early lead with two runs in the third inning. With one out, Wilfredo Tovar and Rafael Fernandez walked. Robbie Shields grounded to third baseman Jhonny Medrano, whose throw to second was dropped by Delino DeShields for an error, leaving the bases loaded. Tovar then scored on Sam Honick's infield out. Cory Vaughn's double brought in Fernandez with the second run.

The Legends scored once in the fifth on a walk to Daniel Adamson, an infield out and an RBI single by DeShields. They tied it in the sixth on Wallace's second triple of the game and a wild pitch.

Louisville native Jason Chowning (1-0), who relieved starter Juan Minaya in the sixth inning, got the win. Brian Streilein picked up his second save, getting the last two outs in the ninth inning after Savannah had loaded the bases with one out.

The series is now even at two wins each, and concludes Saturday night. Game time is 6:05 p.m.
