LAKEWOOD, N.J. - It was another rough offensive night for the BlueClaws on Monday, as Hassan Pena and three relievers carried the Hagerstown Suns to a 5-2 victory at FirstEnergy Park.
Mike Durant was responsible for the lone RBI on the evening, as the Suns jumped out to an early lead and never let up. The visitors struck for three runs, but just one earned, against BlueClaws starter Drew Naylor (0-2) and it was enough to carry them the rest of the way.
The big blow came with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. With runners at the corners, designated hitter Tim Pahuta hit a fly ball to deep right field. Dominic Brown appeared to have an easy play on the ball, but it popped out of his glove for a three-base error allowing two runs to score.
The Suns (3-1) added another run in the sixth, when Michael Burgess led off the inning with an opposite- field home run of off Joe Rocchio. It was Burgess' second long ball of the season and the first hit by an opponent at FirstEnergy Park.
Pena (1-0) held the BlueClaws offense in check through his five innings of work, giving up no runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking one.
The BlueClaws (1-4) did show signs of life down the stretch, tallying three straight hits with two outs in the eighth. Durant's base hit to right scored Michael Taylor from second for Lakewood's first run of the game.
The 'Claws added one more in the ninth and threatened for more. Martin Beno walked two, but all the home side could manage was a single run that scored on a wild pitch.
Lakewood stranded 11 runners in the game, one shy of a season-high. They also hit into a pair of double plays.
The loss, combined with a Lexington win, drops the BlueClaws into sole possession of last place in the South Atlantic League North Division, three games behind first-place Lake County.
The Suns and BlueClaws return to action on Wednesday at FirstEnergy Park at 6:35 p.m. Tyson Brummett will take the hill for Lakewood, making his second start of the season, while Brad Peacock will make his first appearance for Hagerstown.
