Captains Win Home Opener 5-3

(Eastlake, OH) - The Captains started the home season off in style defeating the Delmarva Shorebirds 5-3 on Tuesday at Classic Park. With the win the Captains vault to first place with a 4-1 record. The Shorebirds opened the scoring in the second. After Joe Mahoney doubled to lead off the inning, two batters later, Joe Nowicki doubled him home. The Captains took the lead in the third inning. Jeff Hehr and Lucas Montero both singled. Adam White sacrifice bunted them to second and third. Hehr scored on a ground out by Mark Thompson with Montero taking third. Montero scored on a wild pitch to tie up the game. Karexon Sanchez followed with the Captains first home run of the year and the Captains led 3-1.

The Shorebirds got a run in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Nowicki. The Captains added two of their own in the sixth inning. Roman Pena doubled in a run and Doug Pickens picked up an RBI with his first hit of the year.

Captain's starter Santo Frias lasted 4.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three. He did not factor in the decision. Josh Judy relieved Frias and pitched 2.2 strong innings and picked up the win allowing no runs, not hits, a walk and struck out four. Jonathan Holt pitched one inning allowing a run on one hit. Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless ninth inning striking out the side after a lead off walk and picked up his second save.

The Captains host the Shorebirds again on Wednesday, game time is 12:05 PM. Wednesday marks the return of Senior Days at Classic Park. As they do every game, seniors receive $2 off the regular ticket price.
