Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - One day after making his professional pitching debut in Lexington, KY, right-hander Austin Bailey was placed on the 7-day disabled list today. Right-hander Joseph Guerra will join the Drive in Lexington and be available to pitch in tonight's game.
The 19-year-old Bailey exited last night's contest with two outs in the bottom of the fifth after experiencing soreness in his pitching shoulder, a game in which the Drive went on to win 6-3.
A graduate of Prattville (AL) High School, the Boston Red Sox selected Bailey in the 16th round (504th overall) in last year's First-Year Player Draft. During his senior year, Bailey went 8-3 with a 1.33 ERA (12 ER/63.1 IP). He fanned 92 and walked just 15, an average of 13.1 strikeouts and 2.1 free passes per game.
The 2008 season will be Guerra's fifth in the Red Sox organization, and second year that he has worn a Drive uniform. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2003, Guerra appeared in six games (all as a starter) for the Drive in 2007. The 21-year-old was a perfect 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA (14 ER/31.1 IP).
Over the course of his four year minor league career, Guerra is 10-10 with a 3.89 ERA (86 ER/199.0 IP) in 51 games (28 as a starter) between stops with the VSL Red Sox, DSL Red Sox, GCL Red Sox, Lowell Spinners, and the Drive.
The Drive are in the midst of an eight-game road trip, their first of the year, with stops in Lexington, KY and Charleston, WV against the Legends and West Virginia Power, respectively. The team returns home on Tuesday, April 15th for a four-game set with the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
