Charleston, WV - The GreenJackets (2-4) came away with a 6-4 win over the West Virginia Power (2-4) on Tuesday night. Joe Paterson picked up his second win of the season in relief and Thomas Neal again provided the offense for the second night in a row with a two-run homer that gave Augusta a 5-4 lead.
Augusta trailed 4-3 in the seventh inning with one out when Nick Noonan reached second on a two base throwing error from Brent Brewer. Neal then came up next and connected for his second homer of the season sending one over the left field wall.
The GreenJackets added a single run in the ninth inning for insurance on an RBI base hit from Brock Bond scoring Noonan.
Paterson (2-0) worked 2.1 shutout innings allowing just one hit, no walks and struck out three.
Augusta led 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning but the Power plated two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The GreenJackets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back two-out doubles from Neal and Garrett Baker.
West Virginia came right back in the bottom half with a one out RBI single from Jonathan Lucroy to tie the game at 1-1. The Power plated another run in the second inning on a one-out RBI single from Zelous Wheeler for a 2-1 lead.
The GreenJackets reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Angel Villalona with one out then James Simmons had a two-out RBI single for a 3-2 Augusta lead.
The Power answered back again in the bottom half with two, two-out infield RBI singles from Kurt Crowell and Scott Houin with the bases loaded to take a 4-3 lead.
Augusta starter Orlando Yntema worked 3.2 innings for the no-decision allowing four runs on seven hits. The righty walked one and struck out three.
The GreenJackets and Power continue their series Wednesday morning with Augusta sending lefty Steven Calicutt (0-0, 0.00) to the hill for his second start of the season. The Power counter with right-hander Roque Mercedes (0-0, 8.10). First pitch is at 10:35 a.m.
Game Notes:
Thomas Neal has hit safely in the first six games of the season.
Daniel Turpen recorded his first save of the season working two shutout innings for Augusta. The right-hander allowed one hit, did not walk a batter and struck out one.
Augusta hitters connected for six doubles in the game.
Augusta set season highs in runs scored (6) and base hits (13).
