Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
BILOXI, Miss. - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos rallied in the ninth inning with two runs but ended up dropping their third straight game to the Biloxi Shuckers, 5-2, Wednesday at MGM Park.
The Shuckers also clinched the series, 3-1, handing Pensacola its first series loss this year. Biloxi remains in first place in the Southern League South Division, improving to 10-3, while Pensacola fell to 9-5.
Pensacola started a rally in the ninth inning, after managing just two hits in the first seven innings off starter Drew Gagnon and reliever Stephen Peterson, who picked up the win to improve to 3-0.
The ninth began with Pensacola loading the bases with no outs. However, right fielder Sebastian Elizalde hit back to Biloxi pitcher Hobbs Johnson who forced left fielder Tony Renda out at home. Pensacola catcher Chad Wallach then walked with the bases loaded to score Blue Wahoos first baseman Donald Lutz, who had singled to right field, with the team's first run.
Pinch-hitter Ray Chang then singled to score Blue Wahoos second baseman Brandon Dixon for Pensacola's second run.
However, Biloxi turned to its closer Jaye Chapman with the bases loaded and two outs and he struck out pinch hitter Alex Blandino, the Cincinnati Reds No. 6 ranked prospect, to end the rally. It was Chapman's third save this series and sixth on the year for the Shuckers.
Pensacola pitcher Jackson Stephens (1-1) picked up the loss, after throwing 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Biloxi scored first in the second inning when Shuckers third baseman Brandon Macias hit an infield single to second base and was followed by the fifth double of the season by left fielder Victor Roache. Second baseman Christopher McFarland then singled in Macias and Rene Garcia drove in Roache for a 2-0 Biloxi lead over Pensacola.
Shuckers shortstop Nick Shaw added another run for Biloxi when he doubled in the bottom of the fifth inning to score second baseman Nate Orf to extend the Shuckers lead, 3-0.
The Shuckers added two runs in the bottom of the eighth when Macias doubled in first baseman Nick Ramirez. Biloxi right fielder Kyle Wren then singled to score Macias and go ahead, 5-0.
