
BayBears Eclipse Suns in 6-0 Shutout Victory

JACKSONVILLE, FL - With a combination of timely batting and effective pitching, the Mobile BayBears blanked the Jacksonville Suns with a final of 6-0 Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The shutout was the BayBears first of the 2016 season, as Mobile won their second straight game to take the 2-1 series advantage over Jacksonville.
The BayBears (6-6) were anchored by RHP Yoan Lopez (2-0) who toed the rubber Tuesday night and earned his second straight victory. The Cuban native held the Suns scoreless, surrendering only five hits, one walk and striking out four batters in 6.0 full innings on the mound.
Mobile took the early lead by posting four runs in the top half of the second inning. Stewart Ijames led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base after a throwing error from Suns RHP Austin Brice (0-1) got away at first base. One out later, Michael Perez drove in Ijames with a RBI double.
Lopez followed with a single and scored along with Gabriel Noriega two batters later when Mitch Haniger drove in two runs with a double to give Mobile the 4-0 lead. All four runs were unearned for Brice after the throwing error at first and another error in the inning at third base that allowed Noriega to reach safely and continue the inning.
Ijames drove in the BayBears' fifth run with a RBI double in the sixth inning that scored Gabriel Guerrero and then put the explanation point on the scoreboard with a solo home run deep to right field in the top of the eighth inning to give Mobile the 6-0 lead. Ijames finished the night going 3-for-4 at the plate with the homerun, two RBI and two runs scored.
Game 4 of the series is scheduled for 10:05 a.m. cst on Wednesday. RHP Johnny Omahen (0-1, 3.86) will take to hill for the BayBears while the Suns will send Ryan Newell (0-0, 7.36) to the mound.
When Mobile and Jacksonville wrap up their series after Thursday night's game, the BayBears will return home to open up a five game series with the Tennessee Smokies at Hank Aaron Stadium from Friday, April 22 - Tuesday, April 26.
