Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, Tenn. - The Generals grinded out another win Tuesday night, as Steve Baron's eighth-inning RBI single gave the team a 4-3 win over Birmingham at The Ballpark at Jackson. Birmingham tied the game in the top of the inning, but the Generals answered right back with a run on two hits to earn the victory.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth and the game tied at four, Benji Gonzalez reached on an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Steve Baron came through with a two-strike single off the glove of Birmingham pitcher Brian Clark (0-1, 0.96) that scored Gonzalez to make it 5-4.

Kraig Sitton (1-0, 0.00), who gave up the game-tying RBI double in the top of the eighth, struck out a pair in a perfect ninth to cement the victory for Jackson (8-4). The tall lefty has now tossed 5.1 scoreless innings since coming into the Mariners organization.

The first four innings saw the two starting pitchers go blow-for-blow. Starter Ryan Yarbrough allowed just three hits through four innings for the Generals, while Jordan Guerrero gave up just two hits through four for the Barons. Both starters struck out three over the first four innings.

Everything changed in the fifth inning. Ryan Yarbrough allowed two walks and a single to load the bases, and the first run came across on a fielder's choice. Birmingham (5-8) promptly added another run on Eudy Pina's sacrifice fly off of reliever Matt Anderson. A Steve Baron throwing error allowed a third run to score.

Jackson's 3-0 deficit was short-lived, as Jordan Guerrero failed to record an out in the bottom of the fifth for Birmingham The lefty gave up two walks and a single to start the frame before Tim Lopes drove in two on a double to center to pull the Generals within one. Brad Goldberg replaced Guerrero after Tyler O'Neill walked to load the bases. Guillermo Heredia scampered home on a wild pitch to knot the game up at three.

The Generals manufactured the go-ahead run in the sixth. Ian Miler singled to lead off the frame before stealing his second base of the night. Three batters later, Eddy Alvarez made a throwing error on a Guillermo Heredia grounder that allowed Miller to score from second. The two-out run made it 4-3.

Birmingham tied it up quickly in the eighth. Eudy Pina knocked Anderson out of the game with a single up the middle to lead off. Kraig Sitton was called upon for a two-inning save opportunity. After a Nicky Delmonico sacrifice bunt moved Pina into scoring position, Trey Michalczewski bashed a double off the right-field fence to tie the game at four.

Benji Gonzalez extended his on-base to 12 games with a pair of singles, but Tyler O'Neill saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end despite a pair of walks on the night.
