Birmingham Barons News Release

JACKSON, TN - Birmingham Barons LHP David Holmberg allowed just one earned run in the lengthiest start of the young season by a Birmingham starter, but the Barons faltered with two outs in the ninth to drop a Wednesday matinee 4-3 to the Jackson Generals.

Holmberg, who last season pitched in the Major Leagues for the Cincinnati Reds, finished with 7.1 IP on just 89 pitches. The 24-year-old Southpaw allowed eight hits but surrendered just one earned run while punching out two in his first no decision of the season.

The Barons bats contributed three runs of support for Holmberg, with Nicky Delmonico plating Joey DeMichele in the top of the first inning to give Birmingham a quick 1-0 lead.

After Jackson jumped out to a 2-1 lead, Barons first baseman Jake Peter launched his second home run of the season to even the score 2-2 in the fourth inning. Eudy Pina drove in what appeared to be the game winning run in the sixth inning, scoring DeMichele on a clutch opposite field single to give Birmingham the edge in the middle innings.

DeMichele and Delmonico, the three and four hitters in Birmingham's lineup, combined to go 4-for-9 with two runs and an RBI in the loss with Pina posting the Barons other multi-hit game. Birmingham finished 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. All three Barons runs were scored with two outs.

Brandon Brennan returns to the bump tomorrow evening as the Barons look to depart Jackson with a win before finishing off a 10-game road trip across the state of Tennessee against the Chattanooga Lookouts.
