Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (July 18, 2008) - The Brockton Rox made a splash in the Can-Am League on Friday morning, executing a trade with the Nashua Pride that might spark the Rox to a playoff run. Brockton traded CF Ervin Alcantara to Nashua for OF Dennis Abreu.

Abreu is one of the hottest hitters in the Can-Am League currently. He is riding an 18-game hitting streak, tied for the longest by a player in the league this season. He leaves the Pride leading the team with a .335 average and 12 stolen bases. He also hit seven home runs and drove in 26 RBI in 50 games for the Pride. Abreu's .335 average is the 5th-highest in the league, and Rox Manager Chris Miyake expressed excitement about the new face in his lineup.

"Dennis Abreu is a quality veteran, and a solid number three hitter for any lineup," Miyake said. "He's one of the best hitters in this league, and anytime you can make a trade to bring in a player of his caliber, it should bring the team a boost."

Abreu is in his 13th professional season. He has played nearly 300 games at the AA level or higher. In 1997 Baseball America named him the "Best Player in the Chicago Cubs minor league system." He has played in both the Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals farm systems.

Brockton parted ways with CF Ervin Alcantara in the deal. Alcantara started the season on a tear, driving in 21 RBI by June 20th and hitting well over .300. However, Alcantara has only driven in two runs since June 20th and was just 17 for his last 77 (.221). Alcantara had been leading the team in stolen bases with 15.

Abreu is the younger brother of New York Yankees OF Bobby Abreu. He will be in the starting lineup tonight as the Rox host the Sussex Skyhawks at 7:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium. Rox ace RHP John Kelly (2-3, 2.45 ERA) will start opposite Sussex LHP Craig Snipp (4-2, 3.79 ERA).
