Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Little Falls, NJ -- The Tornadoes failed to get key hits in clutch situations for the second straight night, and New Jersey scored all five of their runs after two were out, as the Jackals won for the eighth time in nine tries against Worcester, 5-2, at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday night.
The Jackals struck right away against Worcester righty Alex Pena (0-3), as Luke Allen and Chris Kelly hit back-to-back two-out home runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, giving New Jersey an early 2-0 lead. The Jackals got to Pena again in the 3rd, as Allen's triple into the rightfield corner scored Zack Smithlin from first base to give New Jersey a 3-0 advantage. Jackals righty Aaron Tressler (2-4), who had struggled all season long, was terrific tonight, allowing just two hits and no runs through his first five innings of work. The Tornadoes finally got on the board in the top of the 6th, when Omar Pena's soft single down the rightfield line plated B.J. Weed who had tripled. But the Jackals got the run right back in the bottom of the 6th, as an Alex Trezza passed ball helped set up an RBI single to center by Andrew Larsen that gave the Jackals their three-run lead back at 4-1. New Jersey tacked on an insurance run in the 7th on a long home run to leftfield by Matt Lauderdale off Worcester lefty Ryan Lobban. The Tornadoes were able to push across an unearned run in the 8th off righty Justin Barnes on two singles and two errors, but could draw no closer.
Tressler (2-4) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just 5 Hits and 1 earned run for the Win and Alex Pena (0-3) allowed 4 Runs (3 earned) in 6 innings and took the Loss. Rusty Tucker struck out the side in order in the 9th to record his league-leading 13th Save of the season. Francisco Caraballo extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games. The Tornadoes stranded seven baserunners in the game, including five in scoring position. Of those five, three were left at third base, and all three men were there with less than two outs. The Tornadoes will try to get back on track against the Jackals on Saturday night when they send righty Junior Guerrero to the mound opposite Jackals righthander Ted Serro. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
The Tornadoes return home on Monday, July 21 for a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks. Monday will be Guaranteed Win Night and Salsa Night. Tuesday is New England Sports Night, while Wednesday is Park & Rec Day!
