Blazers Finish Week 1-2-0

Oklahoma City Blazers News Release


Oklahoma City played three times last week, posting a 1-2-0 mark on the week. The Blazers defeated the Odessa Jackalopes 4- 2in Odessa on December 3. Oklahoma City followed that with a 3-2 loss to New Mexico at home on December 6 and an 8-2 loss at Wichita on December 7 The Blazers is now 12-8-1, with 25 points and in second place in the Northwest Division of the CHL.

BLAZERS GET FIRST WIN AGIANST JACKS - Oklahoma City made its one and only trip through the Permian Basin on December 3 against the Odessa Jackalopes. The Blazers left with its first victory against the Jacks by the score of 4-2. Marty Standish, Jasmin Roy, Hardy Sauter and Peter Arvanitis each scored for the Blazers. Boyd Ballard stopped 42 of 44 shots for the win. The victory was the first in three tries against Odessa

SCORPS MAKE ONLY VISIT A GOOD ONE - Oklahoma City met the New Mexico Scorpions for the only time in Oklahoma City this season on December 6. Each team scored a goal in each of the first two periods. The Scorps netted the game-winner in the third to give them a 3-2 victory. Joe Burton and Blair Manning paced the Blazers with two points (1-1-2). Boyd Ballard stopped 14 of 17 shots in the loss.

A BEATING IN WICHITA - The Blazers finished the weekend in Wichita. Oklahoma City entered the game looking for its ninth straight win over the Thunder. The team left with an 8-2 loss. Hardy Sauter picked up an assist on both Blazers goals, scored by Joe Burton and Ryan Campbell. Former Blazer Tom Gomes had a five-point night (3-2-5), including a hat trick. The loss was the Blazers first in Wichita since March 8, 2001, a stretch of eight straight wins. The loss also snapped the club's six-game winning string against the Thunder.

WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS - Despite outshooting the Thunder 57-35 on December 7, the Blazers were trounced 8-2. Much of that was due to a six-goal second period by the Thunder. That tied a franchise mark for most goals allowed in a period. The last time the Blazers allowed six goals in a period was against the Thunder in Wichita on January28, 1996. The Blazers wont 8-7 in a shootout. Oklahoma City entered the third period with a 7-1 lead, only to have that lead erased in the third period.

TWO STREAKS SNAPPED - The New Mexico Scorpions 3-2 win over the Blazers on December 6 snapped two different Blazers seven-game winning streaks. The first streak snapped was the club's seven-game winning streak at home. After losing its first two games at home, the Blazers reeled off seven-in-a-row in the Ford Center before the setback. The seven-game home winning streak was the longest since an eight-game winning streak to begin the 2000-01 campaign. Also broken was the Blazers overall seven-game winning string. That winning streak was the team's longest since a 10-game winning streak, also during the 00-01 season. TWO MORE STREAKS SNAPPED- In addition to having two seven-game winning streaks snapped on December 6, Oklahoma City had a four-game road-winning streak and eight-game road winning string snapped against Wichita on December 7.

LAST SIX-GOAL DEFEAT - The Blazers six-goal defeat at Wichita is the worst defeat the Blazers have been handed since a 7-1 loss against the San Diego Gulls on November 18, 2000.

SEVEN MAJORS AGAINST WICHITA - The Blazers set a CHL season high for penalty minutes on December 7 with 109. Included in those 109 minutes were seven major penalties, all for fighting. In all, the two teams combined for 200 penalty minutes and 14 major penalties. The last time the Blazers were assessed seven majors in a game was November 23, 2000 against the Topeka ScareCrows when each team was issued eight major penalties, all for fighting. The 109 penalty minutes is the seventh highest penalty minute total in Blazers franchise history. Six of the seven highest penalty minute totals are against Wichita.

SAUTER TOP PLAYMAKER - Blazers defenseman Hardy Sauter is still atop the league in assists with 25. His 30 points (5-25-30) gives him the lead among defensemen in scoring and places him seventh in the league in scoring. Sauter has picked up points (20) in each of his last 12 games. His point-scoring streak is the longest since Marty Standish's 13-game string during the 2001-02 campaign.

POWER PLAY CONTINUES TO SHINE- The Oklahoma City Blazers power play has officially gotten on track. Since a 2-0 defeat at Austin on November 9, the Blazers have been consistent in scoring power-play goals. The team has recorded a power-play goal in its last 12 games and risen from 14th in the league in power-play conversion percentage to 8th in the league at 15.3 percent. The 12-game string is the second longest in Blazers franchise history.
