Silver, Grenville Take CHL Honors
Published on December 9, 2002 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Indianapolis Ice netminder Shawn Silver and Laredo Bucks right wing Chris Grenville have been named the recipients of the Central Hockey League's weekly Goaltender and Player of the Week awards for Week 8 of the CHL season.
Silver earns the honor for the third time already this year, after earlier claiming the award in both Week 4 and Week 7. In three games this past week, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native claimed victories in two of three outings while allowing just three total goals against. In back-to-back wins against the Conference leading Tulsa Oilers Friday and Saturday, Silver made 58 saves. Friday he recorded 24 stops in a 2-0 victory, then narrowly missed recording another shutout over Tulsa Saturday, allowing a single goal with just 31 seconds left to play in a 6-1 victory. Silver also established a new Central Hockey League record this week by not allowing a goal in 222:01 consecutive minutes, breaking the previous mark of 192:17 set last season by Tulsa's Rod Branch.
In Laredo, right wing Chris Grenville has been a key offensive cog for the Bucks, the CHL's highest scoring team. In a home and home series with the Lubbock Cotton Kings this weekend, Grenville figured in five of the Buck's seven goals. Friday night at home, Grenville set up the game winning goal and added an insurance marker during a 3-1 win, then scored twice and added an assist in a 5-4 shootout loss at Lubbock Saturday. The Ontario native sits tied for 8th in the CHL scoring race with 29 points, and is 4th in the CHL with 15 goals. Grenville is the second Buck to earn CHL Player of the Week honors, as center Dave Gove (currently with Laredo's AHL affiliate in San Antonio) claimed the award in Week 3 after recording 12 points in three contests.
