Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (28-14-2) won their second straight home game thanks to a pair of goals by Brad Parsons and 34 saves by David Shantz as they upended the Pensacola Ice Pilots (14-31-2) by a final score of 5-3 on Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 6,783.
The Everblades came out flying, scoring the game's first three goals against a short benched Ice Pilots club. Pensacola, skating with just six forwards, watched Chris Dyment open the scoring for the Everblades just 3:22 into the game. The Everblades defenseman took a pass in the right circle from Dustin Johner and fired it past Ice Pilot net minder Michael Mole to put Florida up 1-0. Jon Lehun collected the second assist on Dyment's fifth goal of the season.
Still leading 1-0 heading into the second period, the Everblades scored a pair of goals in less than a minute early in the frame. Parsons collected his first of the night at 6:37 after a nice give-and-go with David Brine to make it a 2-0 lead and Brad Zacanaro tallied his seventh goal of the season just 48 seconds later on assists by Ernie Hartlieb and Brine.
Despite trailing 3-0 the Ice Pilots battled back to trim the Florida lead to one by the end of the second period thanks to a pair of power play goals. Rob Rankin got the Ice Pilots on the board at 13:57 of the period and Sergei Ogorodnikov notched his 12th goal of the season with 1:26 remaining in the period cut the Everblades lead to 3-2 after two periods.
In the third period, Parsons regained Florida's two goal lead with his second of the night and fourth of the season just 6:34 in by slipping a rebound under the pads of Mole. Ryan Brindley and Vince Bellissimo assisted on the goal. Pensacola responded after killing an Everblades power play by cutting the lead to 4-3 when Greg Watson picked up his sixth goal of the season at 14:24, but Lehun answered back for the Everblades just 30 seconds later by banging home a rebound opening a 5-3 lead. Derek Damon and Johner assisted on Lehun's 15th goal of the year.
In net Shantz turned away 34 of 37 shots to raise his record to 13-7-1, while Mole fell to 8-12-1 after allowing the five goals on 39 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished 0-for-5, while the Ice Pilots closed out the night 2-for-8.
The Florida Everblades, proud affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers, return to the ice on Saturday, February 10 when they host the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena.
