Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - A four-goal deficit in the game's first 22 minutes proved too much, as the Steelheads lost to the Victoria Salmon Kings, 6-3 on Friday night in front of 4,444 fans at Qwest Arena.

The three game series is now even at a game apiece, with the rubber match coming on Saturday, February 10. The loss is the Steelheads (24-18-2-1) ninth on home ice this season, as they drop to 4-3-0-0 against the Salmon Kings (20-28-0-1) in 2006-2007. Meanwhile, the Salmon Kings snap their two-game losing streak and notch their 10th road win.

In a three-goal, first period, the visitors got a shorthanded goal by Wes Goldie and an even-strength tally by Derek Krestanovich at 9:39 and 12:37, respectively. Late in the frame, Goldie got his second of the evening and team-leading 29th of the season, making it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

Just 1:18 into the second period the Salmon Kings took a 4-0 lead on a marker by Milan Gajic, his 15th of the campaign. Moments after Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (9 saves) turned aside a breakaway, forward F.P. Guenette got to a Steelheads' defensive turnover and sent the puck to Gajic who carried the puck to the top of the crease, deked to his backhand and beat the second-year net minder five-hole. That goal signaled the end of Silverthorn's night, as he was replaced by rookie John Daigneau (14 saves).

The Steelheads answered at 7:09 of the second frame, converting on a power play goal by Derek Nesbitt. Defenseman Kyle Peto fed Marty Flichel just inside the blue line and his slap shot went through Salmon Kings' goaltender Julian Ellis (36 saves), rang off the right post and caromed to Nesbitt who netted his 17th of the season.

Through two periods the score was 4-1 Salmon Kings, while the Steelheads led in shots, 26-19.

In the third period the Steelheads cut the deficit to two, on a goal at 42 seconds by Flichel. Peto and Lance Galbraith assisted on his 22nd of the campaign, which was the fastest goal to start a period at home by the Steelheads this season.

However, the Salmon Kings responded just minutes later on Darryl Lloyd's eighth of the season at the 3:06 mark, to move the score to 5-2.

Veteran defenseman Darrell Hay gave the Steelheads some hope midway through the third, ripping a one-timer from the left circles just inside the near post and past Ellis for his fifth of the year. Flichel got the only assist on the power play tally, completing his three-point effort.

In the game's final minute the Salmon Kings added an empty-net, shorthanded goal by Jordan Krestanovich to round out the scoring and seal the 6-3 win. His younger brother, Derek, recorded the only helper.

The final shots favored the Steelheads 39-29, as the Steelheads went two-for-eight on the man advantage while the Salmon Kings ended zero-for-five. Flichel and Peto earned multiple point nights for the home team, while both Krestanovich's, Darryl Lloyd and Wes Goldie picked up multiple points for the victors.

The Steelheads wrap up their three-game series against the Salmon Kings on Saturday, February 10. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
