Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (7-2-1) increased their winning streak to five straight after outlasting the Augusta Lynx (5-4-2) in a shootout, winning 1-0. Rookie goaltender David Leggio recorded his first career shutout by stopping all 16 Augusta shots he faced in regulation and overtime, while Mike Brodeur nearly out-dueled Leggio, making 46 saves in regulation and overtime, but allowed the lone shootout goal.
From the start the Everblades dominated with chances. The Everblades limited Augusta to just two first period shots and five shots in each the second and third periods. Offensively, the Everblades ran into a stingy Brodeur who amazed the crowd of 5,535 at times with his saves.
Both teams had their best chances come in a wild and at times scrambly third period. Augusta saw their best opportunity come midway through the third period when Brian Ihnacak found the puck on his stick on the left side of the crease and Leggio scrambling to shift to his right. With most of the net open, Ihnacak fired his shot wide, keeping the game scoreless.
The Everblades then had their best chances late in the frame while on a 5-on-3 power play, but again Brodeur proved to be the difference maker, stopping shots and chances from all angles.
When the final horn sounded at the end of regulation the Everblades held a 46-12 shot advantage. In the five-minute sudden death overtime period the Lynx had the better opportunities, out-shooting Florida 4-0, but this time it was Leggio that came up big to help send the game into a shootout.
In Florida's first shootout of the year, Danick Bouchard finally found the back of the net, scoring on the Everblades' first attempt, deking the puck nicely to his backhand before lifting it over a sprawling Brodeur. To nobody's surprise, that was the only goal scored, as both goalies took over, including two strong stops by Leggio.
The first came on Augusta's third shootout attempt when Patrick Bordeleau nearly slipped the puck between Leggio's pads, but the youngster was able to squeeze the pads together before the puck crossed the line. Leggio's second big stop came on August's final shooter in the fifth round. Ihnacak had a chance to redeem himself but Leggio stopped his shot with a nice right toe save to give the Everblades the victory.
Leggio gave the Everblades their second consecutive shutout and improved his record to 3-1-1, while Brodeur saw his record go to 1-0-1 after getting credit for the tie.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 0-of-7, while the Lynx finished the night 0-of-3.
