Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (21-8-2) used four power play goals and a season-high 54 shots on goal to pick up a 5-4 overtime win over the Columbia Inferno (13-17-4) on Friday night at Germain Arena.
Phil Aucoin scored the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining in overtime while the Everblades were on the power play to give Florida their second overtime win of the season. The goal which was Aucoin's second of the night, came after Columbia was called for a high-sticking penalty and then a too many men on the ice penalty in the overtime period.
The Everblades forced overtime with two goals in the final 6:41 of regulation. Trailing 4-2 late in the third, Aucoin notched his first of the night and sixth goal of the season at 13:19, rifling a shot past Inferno net-minder Chris Houle. Steve Saviano then tied the game with 24 seconds remaining in regulation with a power play goal sending the crowd of 5,871 into a frenzy.
Prior to that, a wild third period saw the Inferno jump out to a 3-1 lead when Mike Stathopoulos tallied 1:49 into the frame. The Everblades answered that with an even strength goal by Paul Cabana at 9:34 to cut the lead to 3-2. However, just 21 seconds later, Gustav Engman's point shot was blocked over the net by Everblades goalie Phil Osaer but the rebound off the end glass came back over the goal and banked off the leg of Osaer into the net giving Columbia a two goal lead midway through the third period.
The game began strong for Columbia with Leon Hayward tallying a pair of first period goals at 4:01 and 19:38 to give the Inferno a two-goal lead after the first 20 minutes. The second goal by Hayward came on the power play.
The Everblades responded with a second period power play goal when Dan Sisca notched his 11th goal of the season at 9:35 of the period.
Osaer picked up the win in goal for the Everblades stopping 21 of 25 Columbia shots to raise his record to 9-2-2. Houle earned a tie in net after stopping 49 of 54 Florida shots, which brought his record to 9-14-3.
On the power play, the Everblades finished 4-for-7, while the Inferno converted on one of their six opportunities.
