Black Bears Win Big in Series Finale over Batavia, 8-1

The West Virginia Black Bears defeated the Batavia Muckdogs 9-1, in the series finale at Monongalia County Ballpark on Monday evening. RF Logan Hill and 2B Ulises Montilla each collected two RBI at the plate in the victory.

The Black Bears got on the board early on Monday evening when they scored the first run of the game on ground ball hit to second by Montilla, scoring SS Kevin Kramer. The Muckdogs tied the game 1-1 in the top of the second but after that, it was all Black Bears.

The offense got rolling again in the second inning when DH David Andriese hit an RBI double to left which was followed by an RBI single from CF Casey Hughston to give the Black Bears a 3-1 lead. In the third inning, Hill singled to center scoring both LF Ty Moore and Kramer to extend the West Virginia lead to 5-1. For the third straight inning, the Black Bears offense crossed two runs when Andriese scored on a balk which was immediately followed by an RBI single by Montilla. The teams played a scoreless fifth inning until West Virginia got an RBI single by Kramer, scoring Hughston to give the team an 8-1 lead.

SP Dario Agrazal had a strong showing on the hill by tossing 5.0 innings and allowing only one run and striking out four. Agrazal picked up his second win of the season (2-1) and was followed by a shut-down performance from the Black Bears bullpen. Pitchers Nick Hibbing, Sean Keselica, and Andy Otamendi combined for 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three scattered hits. Batavia starter Cody Poteet took the loss (0-1) after only lasting two innings and allowing three runs (one earned).

The Black Bears have a scheduled off day on Tuesday, July 7 but will start a six-game road trip beginning with a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday, July 8.
