Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Staten Island, NY (7/6/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 7-5 on Monday evening at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Hudson Valley picked up a run in the top of the first inning as shortstop Michael Russell singled with one out, stole second base and scored on right fielder Cade Gotta's RBI single. But the Renegades did the most damage of the night in the second inning as they scored four runs on six hits to give them a 5-0 lead. That ended the night for Staten Island's starting pitcher Derek Callahan, who gave up five runs off eight hits in an inning and a third.
The four-run second inning was keyed by RBI singles by left fielder Alex Schmidt, second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Gotta and an RBI double by catcher Danny De La Calle.
Gotta picked up his third RBI single of the night in the top of the fourth inning when with one out, he singled up the middle to score Cronenworth. And the Renegades made it 7-0 in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Schmidt.
That would be all the run support that Renegades starting pitcher Angel Yepez (1-0) needed, as he did not allow a run or a hit in six innings while striking out four batters in the winning effort.
The Yankees scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning off of Diego Castillo to cut the Renegades to 7-3. Staten Island scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI ground out by Jake Hernandez to bring the score to 7-4 Hudson Valley. And the Yankees scored one more run in the ninth on an RBI double by left fielder Zach Zehner but Tomas Michelson closed out the game to pick up his first save of the season.
With the result, Hudson Valley improves to 9-8 on the season while Staten Island falls to 10-8.
Notes: The 14 hits by the Renegades were the most hits that Hudson Valley knocked out in a single game in 2015. Their prior high was 13 hits in the 11-5 win over West Virginia back on June 28. All starters for the Renegades picked up hits and five batters (Cronenworth, Gotta, Sanchez, Paez and Schmidt) had mult-hit nights.
The Renegades return to Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday, July 8th as they host the Brooklyn Cyclones with first pitch at 7:05pm. Wednesday evening is "Bee-do! Bee-do! Night" presented by DKI. Call 845-838-0094, or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
