-SPIKES LOOK FOR BACK-TO-BACK SERIES WINS IN FINALE AT AUBURN:The State College Spikes are on the road to finish a three-game set at Falcon Park tonight as the club's 10th Season continues with the final game of the series against the Auburn Doubledays. The Spikes are seeking another series victory in tonight's rubber match, after taking two out of three from West Virginia July 1-3. The Doubledays took two out of three from the Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from June 22-24. The Spikes are 48-47 against the Doubledays over ten seasons, including a 24-23 record in games played in Auburn. After tonight's game, the Spikes will enjoy an off day on the slate before starting a six-game homestand on Wednesday.
-LAST GAME: Jesse Jenner produced his first professional home run as part of a three-hit night, and Mike Pritchard also contributed three knocks as the Spikes collected a season-high 14 hits in a 7-1 victory over the Auburn Doubledays on Sunday evening at Falcon Park. Jenner went deep to left field with a two-run shot in the seventh. The Cardinals' 2015 seventh-round draft choice, who came into the game without an extra-base hit as a professional, also cracked a double down the left field line in the fifth. Pritchard also scored a pair of runs to go with his three singles that helped the Spikes to victory. Casey Grayson, who brought in two runs with his third-inning single, extended his on-base streak to 16 games, the longest string in the New York-Penn League. Thomas Spitz also extended his on-base streak to 14 games after being hit with a pitch in the third and scoring a run. Landon Beck supported the Spikes' stout offensive effort with six strong innings on the mound for the win.
-CROSS LEADS MOUND TANDEM FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Carson Cross makes his second pro start this evening as he starts a "piggyback" setup on the hill for the Spikes tonight. Cross made his pro debut on Tuesday in Staten Island, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two in his only inning of work. The UConn product went 10-2 with a 2.29 ERA over 15 starts this past spring, striking out 108 batters and walking just 25 over 106 innings in his senior year. Cross will be followed on the hill by right-hander Greg Tomchick, who also relieved Cross on Tuesday. Tomchick was not charged with any runs in his 1 1/3 innings on the mound.
-RIVERA MAKES FIRST PRO START: Right-hander Mariano Rivera, III, who made his first professional appearance on June 23 in State College and tossed two scoreless innings, gets his first pro start tonight for the Doubledays at Falcon Park. Rivera, the namesake and son of the legendary Yankees closer, followed his outing against the Spikes with three one-run innings against Brooklyn last Monday. The Iona College product was the Nationals' fourth-round draft choice this year after setting a school record with 113 strikeouts over 85 innings this past spring.
-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson has reached base in all 16 Spikes games so far to post the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League. The University of Houston product now leads the NYPL in batting average with a .404 mark, and his .485 on-base percentage ranks second in the league. Grayson has been held hitless in just two contests this year, and has eight multi-hit games, including his three-hit performance three nights ago. For the season, Grayson is 7-for-11, with a .750 on-base percentage, when there are runners in scoring position and two outs. The Cypress, TX native also has a .400 average and .516 on-base percentage overall with runners in scoring position
