July 6, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Staten Island Yankees News Release
After evening the series on Sunday afternoon, the Staten Island Yankees (10-8) fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades (9-8) after a late comeback, 7-5.
Staten Island starter Derek Callahan (L, 2-1) had an uncharacteristically rough start, allowing five runs through 1.1 innings. In the first inning, Hudson Valley's Michael Russell doubled to left field, then scored on a Cade Gotta single to make the score 1-0.
The Renegades kept the scoring rolling in the second inning as Manny Sanchez started the inning with a single. Jose Paez followed with a double to right field. Alex Schmidt drove in the first run of the inning with a single, followed by a Danny De La Calle double to make it 3-0. Jake Cronenworth and Gotta each collected RBI singles, knocking Callahan out of the game early with a 5-0 lead.
Hudson Valley collected two much-needed insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Cronenworth and Gotta both singled to plate a run. In the seventh, Joe McCarthy singled, then later scored on a Schmidt single to left field to give the Renegades a 7-0 lead.
The Baby Bombers came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh. Griffin Gordan and Jake Hernandez started the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by a Brandon Wagner walk to load the bases. With Drew Bridges at the plate, De La Calle allowed a passed ball to bring home Gordon, followed by a wild pitch by Hudson Valley reliever Diego Castillo to bring home Hernandez. Bridges brought home a third run with a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Wagner to cut the lead to 7-3.
In bottom half of the eighth inning, Yankees shortstop Kyle Holder reached on a throwing error, then reached third on a wild pitch. Hernandez later sent Holder across the plate with a groundout to make the score 7-4.
Trailing by three runs, the Baby Bombers did not go down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth. Bridges doubled to right field, then scored on a Zack Zehner ground-rule double to right field. However, the late runs were not enough as Hudson Valley claimed the game and the series with a 7-5 win.
The Baby Bombers get their first off-day of the season on Tuesday before hitting the road for six games against Aberdeen and Auburn. Staten Island returns to Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Wednesday, July 15 for Jewish Heritage Night, sponsored by Gold's. Free 2000 Championship Team card sets will be given to the first 2,500 fans in the ballpark.
