Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Buffalo Bisons scored early and often as they rolled to a 10-5 win over the Tides Monday afternoon at Harbor Park.
The Bisons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead off of Jake Arrieta in the first, as Josh Thole lofted a one-out, two-run homer down the left field line. Buffalo added two more runs off Arrieta in the third, then extended its lead with three additional runs in the fourth frame to open up a 7-1 lead.
Arrieta (3-3), who had allowed just seven earned runs in five appearances with Norfolk this year, took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one while throwing 60 of his 99 pitches for strikes.
Mauro Gomez hit two home runs and drove in three to lead the Bisons, while Thole added three runs batted in. The Bisons now lead the International League with 69 home runs this season, eight more than any other club.
Zelous Wheeler belted two solo home runs to lead Norfolk's offense, his first two home runs with the Tides this season. Wheeler has now collected multiple hits in five of his last six contests, batting .455 (10-for-22) with two home runs and four RBI over that stretch.
Travis Ishikawa singled twice and walked in four plate appearances, extending his consecutive on-base streak to 26 games. It was the first action for Ishikawa since May 23, who had missed the previous 10 games with a sprained right thumb.
With the loss, Norfolk dropped just its second series at Harbor Park. The Tides had won or split each of its last seven home series since dropping the opening series of the season to Durham.
The Tides will head to Louisville Tuesday to start an eight-game road trip, with first pitch from Slugger Field set for 7:05. The Tides starter for Tuesday has yet to be announced, while right-hander Greg Reynolds (5-0, 2.92) will start for the Bats.
